West Ham United didn’t pick Arthur Masuaku against Manchester City.

According to Football.London, West Ham United left back Arthur Masuaku simply wasn’t selected to play against Manchester City on Saturday.

The Hammers endured a nightmare start to the new season, as they were thrashed 5-0 at home by reigning Premier League champions City.

Manuel Pellegrini now has big decisions to make ahead of the trip to Brighton and Hove Albion this weekend, and one of them will be at left back.

Despite recently signing a new contract, Masuaku wasn’t even on the bench against City, and it’s claimed that there was no injury problem, he just wasn’t selected by Pellegrini.

The 25-year-old has been in international action with DR Congo this summer, so it may just be that West Ham are giving him time to get back up to speed – but they need him back quickly.

Aaron Cresswell started at the London Stadium on Saturday, but endured a difficult afternoon, struggling to cope with Riyad Mahrez and the overlapping Kyle Walker.

Many would have struggled, possibly even the defensively-shaky Masuaku, but his pace would have been a valuable asset at the back, and he’d have offered more going forward.

From not being involved at all to starting a week later would be a real step-up for Masuaku, but Cresswell’s display showed just how much Masuaku is needed back in the fold, especially after a strong end to last season.
