Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: Behind the Jack Nicholson cameo rumours

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

The movie event of the summer has finally arrived.

Who is the world's greatest actor?

It's hard to think of a tougher question to get film buffs caught in a knot. Popular choices will range from Humphrey Bogart to Marlon Brando, Al Pacino to Robert De Niro. Honestly, there are so many great performances out there that there cannot be a nailed down answer.

However, one which causes many to nod their heads in agreement is the one-and-only Jack Nicholson. With iconic roles in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The Shining, Chinatown, Five Easy Pieces and beyond, there's absolutely no question that the Academy Award-winner is firmly in the running. As you'll be aware, the films we've listed off with glee are pretty older titles. He's been a sorely missed screen presence for some time now, but has he, in fact, returned to finally deliver a performance in a Quentin Tarantino picture?

Once Upon a Time In Hollywood: Quentin Tarantino's best cast!

The popular filmmaker has delivered such modern masterpieces as Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Inglorious Basterds and more. Now, the UK is finally ready to dig into his hotly-anticipated ninth feature on Wednesday, August 14th 2019.

Set in 1969 Los Angeles, this tale follows fading TV star Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant) and his stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt, Fight Club) as they try to adapt to the changing times of the Hollywood film industry. Leo and Brad are arguably the two most lauded leading men on the planet, but to have them together... now that's something.

Tarantino is renowned for scoring great casts, but this one really takes the cake. Joining them, we have Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street), the aforementioned Al Pacino (Scarface), Kurt Russell (The Thing) and more. The film also boasts the final screen role of the late Luke Perry (Riverdale), who sadly passed away earlier this year.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: Jack Nicholson cameo?

It's a truly mighty cast, but does it have Jack?

As reported by Comic Book, actor Lew Temple - who plays Land Pirate Lew - said in an interview that Jack Nicholson was among the actors he was admiring during production of the film, listing him alongside Leo and others: "“I’m a spoke in a wheel in that movie, which is fine, but to watch [Leonardo] DiCaprio, and Brad Pitt, and Al Pacino, and Jack Nicholson, and Kurt Russell, and Margot Robbie, Luke Perry before he had passed, God rest his soul... and then to have Quentin Tarantino overseeing it all, this guy is a mad man. He becomes his movie.”

This caught many fans off guard, who had no knowledge whatsoever of him appearing in the project. Now that it's arrived, it turns out that Lew must have misunderstood or mistaken someone else, because sadly, Jack isn't in it. With all the star power it does have though, it's not too much of an issue.

What was Jack Nicholson's last film?

The legendary actor's last credited role was in a film called How Do You Know back in 2010; he played Charles.

News has been quiet since then, although claims of retirement were put to rest by the actor himself. He was actually reported to play a central role in a remake of the critical hit Toni Erdmann, but he dropped out of the project in 2018.

Considering it's been nearly a decade, fans were thrilled to hear he could be in the new Tarantino movie, but alas, we'll have to keep holding out hope that he'll blow us all away with his next role, whenever that may be.

In other news, has Preacher been renewed?
