Erik Lamela is now under real pressure, if he wants to stay in Tottenham Hotspur’s line-up.

Lamela was handed a start in Tottenham’s opening day match against Aston Villa, but he failed to impress.

Lamela had been brilliant for Tottenham over pre-season, where his performances thrust him straight into starting contention for Mauricio Pochettino’s men.

However, as has often been the case with Lamela, he failed to make much of an impact when needed.

Gareth Bale Is BACK...FIVE Months Late

Although the Argentine did press well in the build up to Spurs’s second goal, he struggled to show much creativity throughout the contest.

With Giovani Lo Celso now available, Christian Eriksen making a huge impact as a substitute, and Heung-Min Son set to return from suspension, Lamela could be staring at a place on the bench again soon.

However, if there is one hope, it is that a game against Manchester City could well suit Tottenham’s £25 million winger (Independent).

Lamela is one of the most effective attackers at initiating the high press, and that could be vital to hurry City.

Spurs will go to the Etihad Stadium and won’t want to sit on the back foot.

Pochettino is a firm believer in his philosophy, and Lamela’s ability to defend from the front could be crucial against a City team who are so comfortable in possession.

If Lamela can impress in City then he may just give Pochettino a selection headache for future weeks, even when his fully fit squad is available.

But if Lamela fails to impress again then he is surely set to return to his place in Tottenham’s bench in the coming weeks.
