If you want some great comedy, we know just the thing…

How far does this golden age of television go?

We’ve seen some truly exceptional TV shows come and go over the years, with such weighty dramas as Chernobyl, Game of Thrones and True Detective pushing the limits of what the medium can achieve. These are great titles, and although you may have had a few laughs with the wittier characters on Thrones, these are far – two, very far – from the comedy genre.

We live in an age of great television, undoubtedly, but has comedy been able to keep up? Arguably the best examples are shows which juggle other things too, like Netflix’s crowd-pleasing and thematically rich BoJack Horseman, and then there are other examples on the streaming service like Big Mouth and F For Family

Is it trailing behind? Well, if anyone would argue that it is, A Black Lady Sketch Show is now officially apart of the antidote.

The wonderful Robin Thede

You know those three shows we listed above? Thrones, True Detective, Chernobyl? Well, other than being fantastic, they also have something else in common.

They’re HBO (Home Box Office) titles! The network is arguably at the forefront of innovation in television, and continue to deliver the most critically-acclaimed works every year, with Netflix and the like doing their best to offer hot competition. One of their latest shows is A Black Lady Sketch Show, created by Robin Thede.

The American multi-talent is a particularly important figure in the entertainment sphere right now and has become quite the renowned personality in popular culture. According to Wikipedia, she became the first African-American woman to be the lead writer for a late-night talk show – The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore – back in 2015. Between 2017 to 2018 she helmed The Rundown with Robin Thede on BET, but now, a new series has been unveiled.

A Black Lady Sketch Show: Watch online UK

As the show’s title would suggest, the episodes are made up of sketches. It’s produced by Issa Rae and written by Robin, boasting some terrific celebrity guest appearances, some potent messages, and of course, some great comedy too.

The scenarios are helmed by a talented cast of women, all African-American comedians ready to signpost this series as the comedy show to keep an eye on in 2019. So, how can you watch it?

US audience can stream episodes on the official HBO website here. Episodes will become available weekly, airing on HBO every Friday; altogether, there are six episodes scheduled for the first season. The last episode – ‘”Born at Night, But Not Last Night’ – is set to air on Friday, September 6th 2019.

However, there has been no UK broadcast information just yet. We’ll keep our eyes peeled for updates, but in the meantime, the HBO YouTube channel has been uploading sketches along with the release, so if you want to check out a bunch, it’s a great place to start.
