Marcelo Bielsa defends Leeds' call on Clarke Oduor sale

Leeds United sold the Thorp Arch prospect last week.

Clarke Oduor of Leeds United looks on during the match between the Western Sydney Wanderers and Leeds United at Bankwest Stadium on July 20, 2019 in Sydney, Australia.

Marcelo Bielsa has defended Leeds United's decision to move on Clarke Oduor.

The Thorp Arch academy prospect was sold to Barnsley on transfer deadline day in a switch which surprised and upset some United fans.

It seemed to come out of nowhere by virtue of the fact that there was no speculation about Leeds - who extended his contract earlier this year - selling him up until he was offload.

The 20-year-old, taken on the club's pre-season tour of Australia by Bielsa, can play in a number of positions, but the Argentine coach has suggested that Leeds didn't necessarily need him due to having more than enough options in each role.

He told a press conference via The Yorkshire Evening Post, ahead of tomorrow's trip to Salford City: "We had an expectation for Clarke Oduor. He's a player who can play as a left-back, winger or number 8.

"At the same time he has Douglas, Alioski, Davis, Harrison, Costa and Clarke. So he was fighting with these players to play in two positions."

Leeds have taken a few big risks when it comes to selling young players, and three of them were sold to Yorkshire rivals Barnsley as it happens.

Oduor follows highly-rated duo Mallik Wilks and Aapo Halme to the Tykes and time will tell whether it's a case of fortune favours the brave for the Whites, or whether they regret it.
