Newcastle secured the services of former West Ham United and Liverpool striker Carroll on a free transfer on deadline day
The England international striker was a free agent following his departure from West Ham at the end of last season.
Andy Carroll backed for Newcastle United success
Carroll’s return to Newcastle on transfer deadline day will have taken many by surprise, and some will consider it a risk from manager Steve Bruce to land the striker.
Former Newcastle midfielder Kevin Nolan, though, believes that Carroll is a very good signing for the Magpies, while Steve McClaren has revealed that he was close to bring the striker to St. James’ Park when he was in charge of the club.
The Chronicle quotes Nolan as saying about Carroll: “I think Steve Bruce has done a great piece of business, I think the fact that they’ve got him is absolutely fantastic.
“I don’t think there’s many like him in the Premier League, I think he’s a top striker on his day, he’s very hard to handle.”
