Cast your minds to mid-December 2015. Tottenham Hotspur battered Monaco in the Europa League group stage and two young midfielders ran the game, tearing apart the French giants with skill and vision beyond their tender years.
One was Tom Carroll. The other, Josh Onomah.
A revelation on the left-wing, the teenager was a bundle of energy and ran the Monaco defence ragged with his confidence and crowd-pleasing flair. At the time, the sky looked the limit for a player who had clearly caught Mauricio Pochettino’s eye.
So what went wrong? Four years on, Onomah has now been discarded without a second thought, sent to Fulham as a makeweight in a deal that saw Ryan Sessegnon finally seal his switch to North London (The Sun).
After all, the England U21 international was far from impressive during loan spells at Villa Park and Hillsborough in recent years with supporters questioning not only Onomah’s quality but his application too.
Though Fulham fans should look back to that dazzling display against Monaco and hope that there’s still a player in there somewhere.
After the whole Joe Bryan thing hearing what Nketiah has done to Bristol is brilliant, also Fulham accepting a deal for their biggest homegrown talent involving Onomah as a makeweight, could never be my club— Jordan Spencer (@JordAvfc) August 8, 2019
Levy has had Fulham's pants down here, gotta rate the guy. Levy finally offloaded Onomah https://t.co/v4E9rPikP1— Jack (@JackAvfc__) August 8, 2019
I see Spurs have finally managed to dump Josh Onomah on to someone . #AVFC— James Burke (@JimmyTheBrummie) August 8, 2019
One of worst players I've seen pull on the blue and white stripes— Jonny Hardy (@jonnyhardy7) August 8, 2019
Respectfully we’ve had Onomah on loan @swfc and he’s couldn’t get in our first 11. Sessegnon is class but he’s not a left back these days.— Andrew Gardner (@AndyJGard) August 8, 2019
Onomah ahead of Cairney? don't be ridiculous. He'll sit on the bench and provide cover, was awful at Wednesday last year.— James (@JBrianR91) August 6, 2019
