John Cleese returns in the sitcom Hold the Sunset but where is the series filmed?

If you’ve ever wondered what Monty Python and Fawlty Towers star John Cleese is up to now then you needn’t look any further.

The comedic legend is currently starring in the BBC sitcom Hold the Sunset which has just returned to BBC One for its second series after the show made its debut back in 2018.

Averaging just shy of five million viewers per episode for its first series, it’s unsurprising that Hold the Sunset earned itself a second series.

The quaint setting and impressive cast of characters have made it an attractive prospect for Friday night viewers but just where is the sitcom filmed?

What’s Hold the Sunset about?

Hold the Sunset tells the story of two neighbours, Phil and Edith. The series focuses on the ageing pair as they make plans to retire together to the Maltese island of Gozo in the Mediterranian.

However, complications in their plan arise when Edith’s 49-year-old son returns, asking to live with her after leaving his wife and two children.

Somehow, Phil and Edith must find a way of sweeping their responsibilities at home aside in order to enjoy the life together they have dreamt about for so long.

Who’s in Hold the Sunset?

Aside from the aforementioned John Cleese, who takes on the role of Phil in the series, Hold the Sunset boasts an impressive list of cast members.

Co-starring in her role as Edith is Alison Steadman, the actress is probably best known for her role in the ever-popular Gavin & Stacey series.

Joining the pair in supporting roles include Jason Watkins, a veteran of British TV and film with roles in the likes of Doctor Who, Trollied and Line of Duty, Anne Reid, who has appeared in the likes of Our Zoo, Years & Years and also Doctor Who and James Cosmo who’s most famed for his role as Jeor Mormont in the hit HBO series Game of Thrones.

Where is Hold the Sunset filmed?

Despite Phil and Edith setting their hopes on retiring the Maltese island of Gozo, we’re yet to see the duo make their dream a reality, instead, they’re still stuck at home.

For Phil and Edith, their home is the Buckinghamshire village of Stoke Poges, just down the road from the town of Slough.

As a result, the series has been filmed in an around the charming green-bordered village as well as in the neighbouring town which really lends a feeling of authenticity to the show.

Series 2’s second episode of Hold the Sunset is set to air at 9pm on Friday, August 9th, with the series continuing each week in the same time slot for the six-episode run.
