According to a report in the Telegraph, Steve Bruce has upset Dwight Gayle by taking his shirt number off him at Newcastle United, and now Leeds United want to sign him.

Gayle was expected to wear number nine at Newcastle this term, but Joelinton took that shirt off him when he signed in a club record deal.

Leeds and West Bromwich Albion are now both keen to snap up Gayle, as they look to strengthen their strike forces.

Leeds are set to lose Kemar Roofe, so a proven scorer of Gayle’s ability would be a very welcome addition.

West Brom may hold the advantage though, as Gayle is said to be keen on a return to the Hawthorns.

Gayle was West Brom’s top scorer last term, after enjoying an impressive loan spell with the Baggies, and the thought of going back is said to appeal.

Whether Newcastle will sanction a deal remains to be seen, but Leeds and West Brom are working on a way of getting a move done.

Newcastle have previously been looking for £15 million for the forward, according to The Sun, which means West Brom can only afford a loan deal.

Leeds may have more chance of financing a permanent transfer, as they have sold a number of players for considerable fees this summer.

If Leeds were to bring in Gayle he could well be the difference marker in Marcelo Bielsa’s side’s bid to earn promotion, as he is such a prolific scorer at Championship level.
