Leeds United selling Kemar Roofe only makes sense if they immediately go out and buy Dwight Gayle.

Leeds were linked with Gayle in TeamTalk earlier this summer in TeamTalk, but they couldn’t finance a deal at that point.

Newcastle are demanding £15 million for the forward, according to the Chronicle, and that price-tag was out of Leeds’ price range.

However, the Whites have now sold Pontus Jansson while Bailey Peacock-Farrell and Roofe could reportedly leave for sizeable fees.

The Daily Mail claims that Anderlecht want to buy Roofe, and losing him would be a huge blow for Leeds, unless Gayle arrives.

If Leeds can finance a move for Gayle it may well seal their promotion, such is his ability.

Gayle scored 23 times for West Bromwich Albion last term, and it is likely that total would only be increased if he moved to Leeds.

The sheer volume of chances that Leeds create means that a clinical finisher like Gayle would wreak havoc if he was to arrive at Elland Road.

Leeds were a goalscorer away from promotion last term, with Roofe arguably their best option.

Indeed, if Roofe had stayed fit, Leeds may well have claimed a top two spot anyway.

There is little question that Gayle would be an upgrade on Roofe though, and he is the man that Leeds should go after.

The big worry, though, is that the Whites would simply let Roofe go without signing a replacement.

Leeds seem happy to have sold Jansson without bringing in another centre-back, but they simply cannot repeat that tactic if Roofe does leave and Victor Orta should immediately be on the phone to Newcastle if he does sanction the 26-year-old’s departure.
