A number of Derby County fans have taken to Twitter to comment on the news that Richard Keogh will be the Rams' captain for the 2019-20 campaign.

New Derby head coach Phillip Cocu made the announcement during Thursday's pre-match press conference ahead of their Championship season-opener against Huddersfield Town next Monday evening.

Keogh is nearing 350 appearances in all competitions for the Rams since joining in 2012 from Coventry City but his time at Pride Park has not been without criticism and promotion heartbreak.

The 32-year-old has come under scrutiny on several occasions over the years by Derby fans, while former Premier League striker Dean Ashton once described him as the "weak link" in the team's defence.

However, Keogh did put in a great display against Leeds United in the second leg at Elland Road as his side became the first team to reach the second-tier final after having lost the first leg at home, and he was praised by fellow Irishman - and Aston Villa legend - Paul McGrath (SportsJOE).

Cocu's decision prompted a mixed reaction from the Derby fanbase, with some of the comments on social media reflecting the difference in opinion:

Keogh, who has 348 Derby appearances to his name, will enter his eighth season with the Rams sitting 20th in the East Midlands club's list of all-time appearances.

He is the first player to break into the list since Michael Forsyth, whose final appearance of his 406 for the Rams was in 1995 (Derby Telegraph).
