Preston reportedly turn down move for Daniel Johnson from Wigan

According to the Lancashire Post, Preston North End have snubbed a loan enquiry from Wigan Athletic for midfielder Daniel Johnson.

The report claims Wigan have asked about taking Johnson on loan at the DW Stadium this season but Preston’s hierarchy have declined with the player viewed as a valuable squad member.

 

Johnson has made over 150 appearances for Preston since joining from Aston Villa for a bargain £50,000 fee back in January 2015.

The 26-year-old ended up making 35 Championship appearances last season, posting his best figures yet in a Preston shirt as he netted six goals and grabbed five assists.

After allowing Callum Robinson to join Sheffield United, it would come as a surprise to see the Lillywhites allow another attack-minded player to depart Deepdale this summer especially to a direct rival.

The Lancashire Post go on to add that it is unknown whether Wigan will return for a cash bid for the player, while Johnson’s current contract at the Lancashire club expires in 2021.

The Latics have been fairly quiet so far this summer, bringing in just three new players including fellow midfielder Lewis Macleod who arrived on a free transfer from Championship rivals Brentford.
