The Black Cats striker endured a tricky start to his Stadium of Light career following his switch from Wigan to Wearside.

A number of Sunderland fans have taken to Twitter to comment on Will Grigg’s comments about his work during pre-season and looking ahead to the new league campaign, as told to the official Sunderland website.
The Black Cats spent a reported £4million (BBC Sport) to sign the 28-year-old striker from Wigan Athletic in the winter transfer window but his first few months on Wearside were impacted by injury and lack of fitness.
Grigg scored just five goals as the Black Cats stumbled in League One and, despite making the playoff final, Jack Ross’ charges fell at the final hurdle in their quest for promotion back into the Championship.
However, following a period of rest and recovery followed by a pre-season which he’s labelled the hardest of his career, he is optimistic about his goalscoring hopes next term.
“From January onwards it was tough for a number of reasons, I never really got going but it’s been good to get a full pre-season under my belt,” Grigg told the official Sunderland website. “I’m a confident boy, I will back myself to the end.
“I’ve done it before at this level, I’ve been promoted four times and scored 20 plus goals in four or five times so there’s no reason why I can’t do that again. I will be backing myself to do that again this season… pre-season has been a tough four or five weeks and personally it has been the toughest out of the 10 or 11 I’ve done.”
Here is what some Sunderland fans said on social media regarding Grigg’s comments, reaction very much split down the middle:
