David Cornell in action for Northampton Town

Reading are among a number of club weighing up a move for Northampton goalkeeper David Cornell before next week’s transfer deadline, HITC Sport understands.

The Royals are in the market for goalkeeping reinforcements and Cornell figures highly on their wanted list after impressing at Northampton last season. .

Former Wales Under-21 international Cornell made 48 appearances in all competitions for Northampton last season and he has caught the eye in pre-season with a number of impressive displays against higher league opposition.

Reading are looking to bring in a more experienced keeper as they only have young Portuguese keeper Joao Virginia on loan from Everton and Sam Walker battling it out for the No.1 shirt.

Cornell would fit the bill for Reading as at the age of 28 he is reaching his prime and having had the experience of being with Swansea in the Premier League and Championship.

The athletic shot-stopper made only one first-team appearance for Swansea, but he was on the bench for 17 Premier League games and over 50 Championship games for the Welsh club.

Northampton would be reluctant to lose Cornell, but with the player entering the final year of his contract at Sixfields they could be forced to cash-in on the keeper rather than risk allowing him to run down his contract.
