The Canaries academy graduate has recently committed his future to Carrow Road.
The Canaries hosted the Serie A high-flyers at Carrow Road on Tuesday and, although Cantwell opened the scoring for Daniel Farke's side, the visitors proved just too good for the Premier League new-boys.
Atalanta, who finished third in the league last term to qualify for the Champions League, equalised through Luis Muriel on the stroke of half-time and then took the lead through the same player just after the hour mark.
Further efforts from Mario Pasalic and Musa Barrow went on to secure a heavy win for the Italians and give Farke plenty of food for thought ahead of their final pre-season friendly, against Toulouse, with their Premier League opener against Liverpool on the horizon.
Cantwell took his goal well, coolly slotting home from Moritz Leiner's assist, and his passing in the final third was sharp as he provided numerous deliveries for the likes of Teemu Pukki to try their luck.
Here is what some Norwich fans on social media said about the youngster's performance, one of just a few positives on the night:
Interesting lesson this evening for the boys, good first half but totally undone by Tim Klose’s mistake on the stroke of half time. Atalanta were too good for us in the 2nd half. My worry was EMI this evening plus the defence, positives Todd Cantwell #NCFC— North Wales Yellows (@NWalesYellows) 30 July 2019
Good to be back at Carrow Road this evening. Thought Cantwell had a good game and that Godfrey will be fine in the Premier League. Also noted that at corners all #ncfc players were attacking with the keeper playing as a sweeper. #OTBC pic.twitter.com/2ezH8o029M— JH (@Treading__Water) 30 July 2019
good first half, 2nd half much more disjointed but i assume it'll be much better come season start, friendlies ultimately mean nothing, was very impressed with Cantwell tonight #ncfc— NCFC Gee (@ncfcgee) 30 July 2019
Godfrey and cantwell looking good... Other than that it's pretty poop! Last season we had. Nothing to lose so they had nothing to live up too this season we've all got high expectations.. Let's hope it doesn't disappoint #ncfc— Richard Garry (@rkgarry88) 30 July 2019
Was also probably the best I’ve seen Todd Cantwell play for the senior side, in the first half especially. Everything was going through him and his ball retention and beating of a man was great. Let’s hope he proves the doubters wrong, after all he’s one of our own!#ncfc #otbc— Norwich City Scout (@NcfcScout) 31 July 2019
Cantwell, Godfrey, Mo and Jamal were pretty standout for me last night.. Pukki's movement was excellent just needs a little sharpen up after a couple of games off. For 50 min we were excellent.. Tim and Max back will look better. Timm really needs some minutes back from inj #ncfc— Scott (@ArcanePirate) 31 July 2019
Lovely seeing so much praise for Todd Cantwell after so many (including me) moaning about him last season. Amazing what a difference playing in your actual position does. #ncfc— Matt Johnson (@mattjohnson333) 30 July 2019
Cantwell came through the Canaries' academy system and made his first-team debut in the FA Cup third round replay defeat to Chelsea in January 2018.
Earlier this month, the 21-year-old signed a new contract at Norwich that commits him to Carrow Road until the summer of 2022 (official Canaries website).
