Dalian Yifang striker Salomon Rondon has told The Sun that he was waiting to see if Manuel Pellegrini wanted him – but no 'proper offer' from West Ham United arrived.
Rondon, 29, spent last season on loan at Newcastle United, and thrived under Rafael Benitez with 11 goals and seven assists.
The Venezuelan powerhouse became a fan favourite at St James' Park, not just because of his goals, but also because of his work rate and endeavour.
However, when Benitez left in June, the chances of a permanent move to Newcastle were over, with the Magpies unwilling to pay the £16.5million release clause given his wage.
Rondon went back to West Bromwich Albion, and he was strongly linked with a move to West Ham United, who were in the market for a centre forward.
Rondon worked with Hammers boss Pellegrini at Malaga, and a reunion appeared to make perfect sense, before the striker instead reunited with Benitez at Dalian Yifang in China.
Now, Rondon has commented on the situation, admitting that he was waiting and delaying his future for West Ham and Pellegrini, but no 'proper offer' came – and with Benitez calling constantly, he picked Dalian Yifang.
Rondon believes he can return to the Premier League one day because of his style of play, but is really happy to be playing in China right now.
“We never saw a proper offer,” said Rondon. “I was waiting to see if Pellegrini would call. I never received that call and Rafa was calling me all the time, so I chose to go to China.”
“I can play again in the Premier League one day because I am the kind of striker people like in England — scores goals, works really hard, runs, fights with the defender. But I am now thinking about Dalian with Rafa. It’s an amazing country and I am really happy,” he added.
