Roma have been keen to sign Alderweireld all summer, and are willing to offer the Spurs defender a contract worth £3.2 million a year.
At the moment Roma are refusing to pay Tottenham’s asking price for the Belgian though, and the deal has just become more complicated.
Alderweireld’s £25 million release clause has expired, meaning Tottenham can charge even more for the centre-back now.
If Alderweireld does stay at Spurs then the London side do risk losing him a free, however, so they could be persuaded into selling if Roma present a big enough offer.
It is claimed that Alderweireld would be willing to move to Roma, if a fee between the two sides is agreed.
If Spurs were to lose the experienced defender now it would be a major blow to Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
Alderweireld has captained Tottenham in pre-season, which just goes to highlight his important to the side, and if he was to leave White Hart Lane it would leave Pochettino’s options for the season looking weaker.
