Fyodor Chalov won the Golden Boot in Russia last season but is he the striker Crystal Palace need to secure their Premier League status?

Crystal Palace are set to make a bid of around £14 million for CSKA Moscow’s much-coveted centre-forward Fyodor Chalov, according to Championat.

Ask any Crystal Palace fan which position the club needs to reinforce before the start of the Premier League season and the vast majority will make it clear that a new striker is a must.

Roy Hodgson’s strikers scored just seven Premier League goals between them last season and five of those came from Michy Batshuayi, who has since returned to parent club Chelsea after a fine loan spell at Selhurst Park.

Fortunately, Crystal Palace appear to be stepping up their transfer plans with just over a week remaining in the transfer window. Reports in Russia claim that they will make a big-money bid for CSKA talisman Chalov in the near future.

The two-time international won the Russian Premier League Golden Boot last season with 15 goals in 30 games for a CSKA side who finished fourth, 13 points behind runaway champions Zenit St Petersburg.

But it is not just Chalov’s impressive goals-per-game record that would make his potential move to Crystal Palace an excellent piece of business.

The Mirror claimed earlier in July that Liverpool, Tottenham, Manchester City, Arsenal, Manchester United and even Bayern Munich were interested.

Yet, at just 21, perhaps Chalov would be better off joining a club like Palace where he would be allowed to develop relatively free from intense media scrutiny.
