The 29-year-old midfielder, who joined the Rams from Huddersfield Town in the summer of 2015, has completed the switch to Kenilworth Road after a recent trial period with the Hatters.
Butterfield, who spent time on loan at Sheffield Wednesday and Bradford City during the last two seasons, made 89 appearances for Derby in total and scored nine times.
The former Barnsley and Huddersfield man, whose Derby deal was mutually terminated has agreed an undisclosed-length deal and becomes the Hatters' seventh signing of this summer's window, according to BBC Sport.
Here is what some of the Pride Park faithful said on social media about Butterfield's departure:
Better than a signing— DCFC (@DcfcFansTalk) 30 July 2019
Had a decent first season and showed great potential before falling out of favour. Wish him all the best.— Paul Burrows (@Ramsfan256) 30 July 2019

Didn’t deserve the stick he got here. Good player. Good luck !— Joe Marvell (@JoeMarvell) 30 July 2019
Not at first, he did well. When new managers came in he didn't fit their style of play and things went down hill for him. He definitely went off the boil but he has got it, if he can find it again lol.— Graham Salloway (@Grasall) 30 July 2019
Good. He was a panic buy who never settled here.— ossieend (@ossieend) 30 July 2019
Hopefully, we'll use the salary and fee "if there is one" to strengthen our team.
At last, bye.— Ed (@ReachEd) 30 July 2019
One waste of money gone— Gary (@garyslack75) 30 July 2019
Butterfield could line up against his old side on 5 October, when Luton visit Derby's Pride Park, and again on 25 January, when the Rams travel to Kenilworth Road.
