Aston Villa are reportedly keen on goalkeeper Mattia Perin.

According to Tuttosport, Aston Villa have laid the foundations for a deal to sign Juventus goalkeeper Mattia Perin, and a move may materialise quickly.

Villa have been splashing the cash in the transfer market so far this summer, strengthening Dean Smith’s squad with 10 signings ahead of their Premier League return.

One position yet to be strengthened is in goal, where Jed Steer fared well in the second half of the season but doesn’t appear to be trusted in the Premier League, and Love Kalinic struggled after arriving in January.

Villa have been subsequently linked with a host of goalkeepers, and the latest in the mix is Juventus stopper Perin, with foundations allegedly laid for a deal.

Perin, 26, was tipped for stardom during his time with Genoa, and looked to have made his big move to further his career by joining Juventus last summer, only to spend the season behind Wojciech Szczesny.

Perin is a quality goalkeeper with international caps for Italy, but there is a major reason for Villa to worry already – and it revolves around his medical.

Benfica confirmed just 11 days ago that Perin failed a medical with them and needed a four-month rehabilitation period, meaning they had shelved the deal until January.

That move has now allegedly fallen through, giving Villa a chance to sign Perin, but if he’s out for four months, manager Smith and co should be looking to get somebody else in.

Villa shouldn’t pay big money to wait for a goalkeeper until the middle of their return to the Premier League, and with a history of injury problems, Villa should be looking elsewhere.
