Fabio Borini had a fine record against Newcastle United in the Tyne-Wear derby - but is he set to make a shock return to the Premier League?
Newcastle United are eyeing a shock deal for AC Milan forward Fabio Borini, according to Sport Mediaset, as a rather bizarre summer at St James’ Park rumbles on.
It is a strange time to be a Newcastle fan.
While Rafa Benitez has bid farewell, replaced by the distinctly unpopular Steve Bruce, The Magpies have also shattered their transfer record to sign £36 million Joelinton.
And Newcastle supporters will no doubt be left a little conflicted once again with Sport Mediaset claiming that Borini could be on his way to Tyneside. The Italian, like Steve Bruce, is a former Sunderland man after all.
Borini spent three seasons on Wearside between 2013 and 2017, joining in a £10 million deal (BBC), and he has a particularly impressive track record against the men in black and white.
The former Chelsea and Liverpool man scored in Sunderland’s famous 3-0 win away at Newcastle five years ago. Just a few months earlier, he scored a stunning late winner at the Stadium of Light before celebrating with no shortage of passion.
You’d think that there might be enough water under the bridge now, but given the reaction to Bruce’s appointment, it may take some time for Newcastle fans to get over the Italian’s potential return to the North East.
