The Spanish winger has looked sharp for Aston Villa in pre-season.
Jota played under Smith while the duo were at Brentford and the Spaniard enjoyed a particularly good spell of form in the second half of the 2016/17 season, scoring 12 goals and assisting five more in 21 Championship appearances.
The winger is now hoping to rekindle that kind of success at Villa in the Premier League.
As quoted by avfc.co.uk, Jota said: “Since the manager called I knew I wanted to come here, because I know the way he likes to play football is the way I like, it is similar. I am very happy to work with him.
“It was a good time at Brentford, I know him very well and I feel I want to give back to him with the confidence he has put in me.”
The 28-year-old has been one of the stand-out players for Villa over the last few weeks, particularly shining in a 5-1 win away to Walsall. He scored a double in that match, also providing a classy assist for fellow new boy Wesley.
With strong performances against Minnesota United and Charlton too, Villa fans have plenty of reason to believe he could be a hit in the first-team.
He’s enjoyed a particularly good link-up with Jack Grealish and Frederic Guilbert. If all three can bring good form into competitive action then Dean Smith’s right flank could be exciting to watch next season.
The caveat would be that he is relatively untested at the elite level, having spent the majority of his career playing in the English and Spanish second-tiers.
The Premier League could be a big step up.
Smith clearly thinks he can do the job though and having worked with the player before knows how to get the best out of him.
It’ll be interesting to see how he copes with the demands of the English top-flight when the real action kicks off next month.
