Top Gun: Maverick has rounded up a stellar cast, but is Charlie back for the action?
"I feel the need..." for a sequel!
For years, fans of Tony Scott's 1986 classic have called out for more action. It's one of the most iconic movies of the eighties, which really is a testament to its unwavering status over the years. Packed with quotable dialogue, memorable performances and exhilarating spectacle, Top Gun still hits modern audiences with waves of nostalgia.
Sadly, director Tony Scott passed away back in 2012, and it looked as though the project may never materialise. He had directed such notable films as True Romance (written by Quentin Tarantino) and Enemy of the State, but Top Gun always remained the crown jewel of his filmography.
When a sequel finally looked as though it was going to reach us, fans were desperate to dive into the casting and see some footage. Fortunately, a trailer has finally arrived and it's gone down an absolute storm.
Top Gun 2: Tom Cruise is back!
That's right, Top Gun: Maverick is speeding its way to audiences as we speak with a stellar ensemble.
Directed by Joseph Kosinski (TRON: Legacy) the trailer opens with some stunning cinematography, immediately teasing an epic atmosphere the film will surely deliver. Voice-over begins to unravel the legendary mysteries of a certain Captain... the one-and-only Captain. Then, Pete "Maverick" Mitchell is revealed, offering fans the concrete news they'd hoped for.
It's a great moment, and one of many scattered across a fairly brief trailer. Honestly, it did exactly what it needed to; we see Cruise back, jacket with sunnies and all, a fresh cast and glimpses of high-octane spectacle. Top Gun: Maverick promises to bring the thrills and the cast certainly brings the stars.
We have Jennifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind), Miles Teller (Whiplash), Jon Hamm (Baby Driver), Ed Harris (Westworld) and of course, the return of Val Kilmer (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) as Iceman.
Is Kelly McGillis in Top Gun 2?
The 62-year-old actress is perhaps best known for playing flight instructor Charlie in Top Gun, but also starred in such efforts as Witness and The Accused throughout the eighties.
Her chemistry with Cruise was a highlight for a number of fans, so inevitably, they were left a little confused when she didn't appear in the sequel's trailer. Why wasn't she in it? Well, that's because she's not set to star in the film at all.
Kelly isn't credited on IMDb to reprise the role and has only starred in smaller projects like TV series Z Nation in recent years. Fans speculated that her return could have been kept a surprise, as we don't see Val Kilmer in the trailer either. However, it looks pretty much set in stone that the actress will be missing out this summer blockbuster.
It's been decades since the release of the first film, which has urged many to point out just how bafflingly well Tom Cruise has aged.
Top Gun 2: Release date
So, do we have a date?
Yes, we do. Top Gun: Maverick is set to soar into UK cinemas on Friday, July 17th 2020. It's sure to boast a mighty landing amidst the summer box office. Since Tom's misfire with The Mummy, he's blown us all away with Mission: Impossible - Fallout, and we hope he does the same here. Maverick is back!
In other news, was The Gay Footballer all one big hoax?
