Dino Zoff is one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time.
A six-time Serie A champion with Juventus, a 1982 World Cup winner with Italy and a former Ballon D’Or runner-up, there are few better placed to judge the next generation of shot-stoppers.
And it is telling that Zoff sees Mattia Perin, rather than AC Milan superstar Gianluigi Donnarumma or Napoli’s cat-like Alex Meret, as the future of the Italian national team, not to mention the best goalkeeper in Serie A.
“I consider him to be the best Italian in his role and that’s not just at club level, but also for the Nazionale,” Zoff said last year, in quotes reported by CalcioNews24.
“Perin is so popular because he represents (goalkeepers) very well. He is the classic number one with good technique.”
According to Gianluca di Marzio, Aston Villa are hoping to make the £11 million Juventus goalkeeper their latest signing in a busy summer for the Premier League newcomers.
Juve’s sporting director Fabio Paratici is heading to England for talks and Perin is likely to be central to any discussions. It is no secret that Aston Villa want a new number one and there’s little doubt that the 26-year-old would be a substantial upgrade on the error-prone Lovre Kalinic or Orjan Nyland.
And Perin would arrive with the seal of approval from arguably the greatest goalkeeper to have ever patrolled a penalty area.
