Perennial Chelsea loanee Todd Kane could return to the Championship with Jonathan Woodgate’s Boro after being released by the Premier League club.
Middlesbrough are hoping to reinforce their defence by signing Todd Kane following his release from Chelsea, according to the Mail.
With just a few weeks until the new Championship season kicks off, Jonathan Woodgate is yet to really put his stamp on a team he inherited from Tony Pulis over the summer.
Boro haven’t made any new signings since Woodgate took over, unless you count the returning goalkeeper Tomas Meijas, although Woodgate was at pains to point out on Tuesday that he did have targets in mind, speaking to the Gazette.
And, if the Mail is to be believed, one of those is 25-year-old free agent Kane.
The right-back’s long Chelsea career came to an end when his contract expired earlier in the off-season though it shouldn’t take long for him to find a new club.
Kane has plenty of Championship experience from loan spells at Nottingham Forest, Blackburn Rovers and Hull City after all, while he has also turned out for NEC Nijmegen and Oxford United.
Ryan Shotton was Middlesbrough’s starting right-back last season though he is arguably more comfortable at centre-half. Pulis, of course, is famed for playing central defenders on the flanks in order to add as much height and defensive solidity as possible.
But the addition of Kane would give the North East outfit far more balance and attacking intent, perhaps signifying a change to a more positive style of football under Woodgate.
