Additionally, The Northern Echo note that Bruce wants two strikers as well as a winger, central midfielder and full back as those five signings.
One signing will be Hoffenheim attacker Joelinton, but Bruce appears to have a plan in mind for his next signings, with Andy Carroll one option for his attacking options.
Another appears to be Welbeck though, with the Magpies seemingly considering a free agent attacker given that they're spending so much on Joelinton.
Welbeck, 28, is a free agent having left Arsenal on June 30th. The former Manchester United ace hasn't played since suffering a major ankle injury in November, and with no pre-season under his belt, he may be playing catch-up.
However, he already has an existing relationship with Bruce. Welbeck joined Bruce at Sunderland in 2010, and notched six goals in 26 Premier League games.
A reunion may be somewhat appealing to Welbeck, who will be keen to get a new club ahead of the Premier League season, and heading back up to the North East makes some sense.
His wages would likely be high, but at least Newcastle would be able to save funds for other positions, with Bruce aiming to beef up his squad with additions in defence, midfield and attack.
