Toby Alderweireld will play a key role for Tottenham Hotspur once again this season as they push for their maiden trophy under Mauricio Pochettino’s stewardship.
Dean Saunders has suggested that Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld should replace Harry Maguire at Leicester City if he moves to Manchester United this summer.
The Independent recently claimed that Maguire’s move to Manchester United is imminent after an £80 million fee was agreed for his signature.
If Maguire does make the switch to Old Trafford then he’ll want to prove that he is one of the top CB’s in the Premier League, alongside Tottenham’s Alderweireld and Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk.
Nonetheless, former Aston Villa and Wales striker Saunders was critical of the fee being reported for Maguire as he made a bizarre suggestion.
“If that’s the benchmark for a centre-back, ‘£80 million’, I mean it has become ridiculous now,” Saunders told TalkSport. “£80 million for Harry Maguire! It’s not his fault, but where’s it going to stop?
“Toby Alderweireld for £25 million or Harry Maguire for £80 million? He’s 30 and you can’t get the money back [from his signing], but he’s probably a better player right now.
Saunders added: “Why don’t Leicester go and buy Toby now as a replacement for Harry Maguire and they have got another £55 million to spend on top.”
It would be one of the bigget shocks of the summer if Alderweireld were to swap White Hart Lane for the King Power Stadium.
The Foxes are definitely a club on the up, especially under the stewardship of Brendan Rodgers, but they are far away from Spurs.
The North London club have Champions League football at their disposal as they reached the final of the European competition last season.
