Filip Helander made his debut for Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers today.

Steven Gerrard has told Rangers TV on YouTube that he was pleased with Filip Helander’s debut, but claimed that the big centre-back was let down by his team-mates today.

The Gers were held to a 1-1 draw with Championship side Blackburn Rovers at Ibrox.

Helander, a £3 million signing from Bologna earlier this month [The GET], played the final half-an-hour but Rangers were pegged back within minutes of his arrival.

Lewis Travis equalised for Rovers midway through the second period – a goal where neither centre-back Nikola Katic or goalkeeper Allan McGregor covered themselves in much glory.

Gerrard, whose side took the lead through Jermain Defoe in the first half, told Rangers TV on YouTube “I think he was fine out there. No problems. Unfortunately the players around him didn’t help him today.

“When he came on we conceded, but it was nothing to do with Filip. He handled his debut pretty well.”

It was a scathing assessment from Gerrard. Even though he didn’t name the players involved, he is most likely thinking about Katic and McGregor.

But still, it was a pre-season friendly and it’s better that the Rangers pair make mistakes in these games rather than the competitive ones.

Gerrard’s side are back at Ibrox on Thursday when Progres Niederkorn visit Scotland in the first leg of a second-round Europa League qualifier.
