Val Kilmer’s return in Top Gun: Maverick to win over sceptical fans - Iceman is back!

Val Kilmer - Top Gun (1986)

Top Gun: Maverick is shaping up to be one of the cinematic highlights of 2020 thanks, in part, to the return of a fan-favourite character

After an agonising 34-year wait, fans of the all-action plane-them-up, Top Gun, are finally getting a sequel to arguably the cinematic highlight of 1986.

The first trailer for Top Gun: Maverick dropped on July 18th and it's fair to say that movie fans who were sceptical of another Hollywood cash grab were left with an eyebrow raised at the impressive sights on show.

The biggest selling point for Top Gun are the plane-based action scenes and oh boy has the new film massively stepped it up in this regard. Couple that with a star-studded cast and we've got another sure-fire hit on our hands.

However, there's one thing missing from the new trailer that would've sent fans into overdrive and left them on a highway straight back to the danger zone!

Val Kilmer's return

While he may not appear in the first trailer itself, Val Kilmer's Iceman is slated to appear in the upcoming sequel and it's something that has fans of the classic Tom Cruise flick excited at the prospect of a heroic reunion between wingmen Maverick and Iceman.

Back when the film was in pre-production, Val Kilmer is reported to have campaigned on social media to reprise his role in the film and by June 28th, 2018, Iceman was back in the cast.

However, little is known about Val Kilmer's return and the absence of the character in the new trailer will only drive speculation further but his presence in the upcoming film is sure to be lapped up by fans of the 1986 original.

Fingers crossed that the funeral scene we catch a glimpse of in the trailer isn't his!

What's Top Gun: Maverick about?

Set 34 years after the original Top Gun, Maverick continues the story of Tom Cruise's Peter 'Maverick' Mitchell who is still a lowly captain despite his long years of service.

The film sees Maverick take on the role of teacher as he becomes one of the Top Gun flight instructors.

However, his past catches straight back up with him as Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), the son of Maverick's old flight partner Goose, joins Top Gun in the hopes of emulating his father.

Who else is in it?

Joining Tom Cruise, Miles Teller and Val Kilmer in Top Gun: Maverick is a star-studded cast featuring established actors and relative newcomers alike.

Jon Hamm (Baby Driver) is one of the headline additions to the cast and will be joined by Ed Harris (Westworld and The Truman Show), Glen Powell (Hidden Figures) and Jeana Louisa Kelly (Uncle Buck and Ant-Man) as well as Lewis Pullman (Catch-22 and Bad Times at the El Royale) and Jennifer Connolly who played Karen, the suit lady, in 2017's Spider-Man: Homecoming

Unfortunately, we've still got quite a wait for Top Gun: Maverick to fly into cinemas as its release date isn't until June 26th, 2020.
