Cats: The Musical is getting its very own Hollywood adaptation and it’s shaping up to be one of the strangest looking films of the year
Despite being quite possibly the strangest looking film of 2019, Cats is heading our way later this year and we can’t help but feel a little intrigued by the quite frankly bizarre new trailer that dropped for the film on July 18th.
If singing and dancing human-cat CGI hybrids are your cup of tea then this film looking to be just the thing for you.
The film is helmed by Tom Hooper, the director of Oscar-winning efforts such as 2012’s Les Miserables, 2010’s The King Speech and 2015’s The Danish Girl which won eight Academy Awards between them.
However, it is the film’s rising new star that is currently making the headlines, Francesca Hayward.
What’s Cats about?
Cats, the movie, is based on the long-running musical of the same name that made its debut in London’s West End way back in 1981 and has been performed worldwide ever since, becoming arguably the most successful musical ever made, earning a reported $2 billion worldwide by 1994.
The film is set to tell the story of a group of cats known as the Jellicles, who are tasked with making the rather difficult choice of selecting one of their tribe to ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life.
For those not quite following, it appears – although we don’t claim to be experts on the inner-working of Cats – that the aforementioned felines are in some sort of kitty purgatory and whichever one is chosen to ascend to the Heaviside Layer is about to start another one of their nine lives.
Who is Francesca Hayward?
Francesca Hayward has been cast in the principal role of Victoria, the White Cat, despite the fact that until now she’s had no conventional acting experience whatsoever and Cats will be her first role in any feature film to date.
However, her past work off-screen suggests that she could well be the perfect choice to appear in Cats.
Hayward’s career to date has been spent exclusively as a ballerina except for a minor role in the 2017 short film The Sun is God.
Since joining the Royal Ballet in 2010, Hayward has appeared in 16 productions including The Nutcracker, Romeo and Juliet and The Winter’s Tale so casting her in an all-singing all-dancing musical seems to fit the bill quite nicely.
Who’s she joined by?
Surprisingly, Cats has assembled an absolutely stellar line-up of actors to fill its cast up nicely.
Joining newcomer Francesca Hayward are well-established actors such as Dame Judi Dench, Sir Ian McKellan and Idris Elba alongside the larger than life James Corden and Rebel Wilson.
Also making an appearance in Cats are the music artists Taylor Swift and Jason Derulo.
Cats the film, is set to swing its way into cinemas on December 20th, 2019 making for a truly fabulous Christmas for any fans of the original musical. However, it will have tough competition in the form of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker which is currently also set to release on December 20th.
