Benjamin Kimpioka could have a big role to play as Jack Ross’s Sunderland look to win the League One title at the second time of asking.

There wasn’t much to write home about as Sunderland were held to a goalless draw by Benfica’s B team in their latest pre-season clash on Thursday night.

It was a game lacking real quality of clear chances with new Black Cats stopper Lee Burge forced into a couple of rather comfortable stops while Will Grigg’s struggles in front of goal continued at the other end of the pitch.

In fact, quality in the final third was perhaps the main reason why Sunderland missed out on promotion last season. So at least the performance of young Benji Kimpioka gave the supporters something to look forward too with the new League One campaign looming large.

The 19-year-old Swede made a smattering of first-team appearances last season but he should get more chances to impress under Jack Ross on last night’s evidence.

Kimpioka made a real difference with his pace and power, giving Sunderland the cutting edge and unpredictability that they’ve been crying out for in the final third. No wonder Black Cats fans, and former striker Stephen Elliot were impressed.

If only Kimpioka would extend a contract which is still due to expire next year.
