Sunderland have snapped up Coventry City defender Jordan Willis.

Jordan Willis of Coventry looks on during the Sky Bet League One match between Burton Albion and Coventry City at Pirelli Stadium on November 17, 2018 in Burton-upon-Trent, United Kingdom.

Sunderland have secured a major coup, as defender Jordan Willis has joined the club on a two-year contract from Coventry City.

Sunderland have brought in the likes of Lee Burge and Conor McLaughlin so far this summer, and Jack Ross has gone into the transfer market once again.

Ross wanted a new centre back to help out Tom Flanagan, Alim Ozturk and Jack Baldwin, with loanee Jimmy Dunne returning to Burnley.

Sunderland have now beaten competition from the Championship to sign Willis, handing him a deal until 2021 in a major free transfer signing.

Willis, 24, was born in Coventry and came up through the ranks at the Ricoh Arena, racking up more tha 200 appearances for the club.

The defender was previously worn the captain's armband for the Sky Blues, and as something of a hometown hero, his exit has hit some fans hard.

Some fans have been taking to Twitter to blast Willis for his move, believing that he has shown a lack of ambition by joining another League One side rather than going to the Championship.

Others think Sunderland are only going backwards, and have admitted they no longer even care about Willis, branding him a snake for joining a League One rival.
