Steve Bruce once raved about Newcastle United, and it could well be that he makes a move for the free agent striker when he takes over at St. James’ Park.
When he does arrive on Tyneside his first priority is likely to be to sign a striker, as Newcastle’s options look so short.
The sale of Ayoze Perez and the termination of Salomon Rondon’s loan mean that Newcastle have lost their two top scorers from last season, and there is a clear need to add up-front.
Welbeck could now become an option for Newcastle, as a free agent.
Newcastle, of course, do not like to sign players of Welbeck’s age.
However, an exception could be made for the 29-year-old, as they won’t need to pay a transfer fee.
Bruce also knows Welbeck well, as they linked up at Sunderland together earlier in their respective careers.
And Bruce said to the Chronicle: “I’m not surprised at the impact he has had at Man U because, for someone so young, some of the things he did for us were terrific.
“We saw while he was here what a top, top player he is.”
Welbeck’s career in more recent times has been plagued by injuries, but that doesn’t mean that he couldn’t have something to offer at Newcastle.
If the Magpies could keep him fit, Welbeck’s pace and energy would surely be welcomed at St. James’ Park.
And Bruce’s arrival would surely increase the likelihood of Newcastle making a move for the free agent striker this summer.
