So this is not the first time Neil Lennon has tried to sign Sheffield United’s George Baldock.
According to the Daily Record, the Blades star is one of a number of right-backs on Celtic’s wish list with the Scottish Premiership champions mulling over a £3 million move for a player who shone as Chris Wilder’s side earned promotion to the Premier League last season.
And it seems that Lennon, appointed as Celtic’s permanent manager at the end of last season, has been keeping his beady eye on Baldock for a while now.
The Daily Record claims that the Northern Irishman wanted to sign the former Oxford United and MK Dons flyer last year too, when he was still in charge of Hibernian.
So no wonder Baldock is back on Lennon’s radar after enjoying perhaps the best season of his career with Sheffield United. The 26-year-old was a revelation as The Blades finished second in the Championship, solid at the back and a real presence when motoring forward down the right-hand side. That's everything Celtic need in the post-Mikael Lustig era.
And with Jack Stacey heading to Bournemouth and Tommy Smith set to sign for Stoke City, now could be the optimum time for Celtic to go all-out for Lennon’s long-term target.
Though convincing Sheffield United to part with one of their key players is easier said than done.
