Euphoria has certainly been making a name for itself Stateside with the Zendaya-starring teen-focused drama picking up lots of attention for all manner of reasons, good and bad.
The new HBO series has earned praise from critics for the acting performances on show, stunning visuals and the way in which its handles some pretty mature subject matter. However, certain sections of the audience have found some of the said mature subject matter hard to watch at times.
One area of interest in the series so far has been the character Jules (Hunter Schafer), who many believe is a transitioning transgender woman, are they right?
What's Euphoria about?
The series focuses on a group of school students as they navigate the intricacies of teenage life, dealing with everything from drug use and violence to relationships and sexuality.
Euphoria primarily tells the story of Rue (Zendaya), a 17-year-old recovering drug addict who has just returned home from rehab but is thrown straight back into the deep end when she heads back to school.
Episode 4 of the series saw Rue and the aforementioned Jules kiss at the end of the episode, something which takes on extra significance once you know Jules's backstory.
Who is Jules?
Euphoria starts with Jules just first moving to the nameless town in which the series is set. As the new face at school, it takes a while for Jules to adapt to this new life.
She moved to town after her parents divorced. Ever since she was a child, Jules has had a strained relationship with her mother. At just 11-years-old, Jules was admitted into a psychiatric hospital by her mother, something which has left the two at odds ever since.
Is Jules transitioning?
Yes! Jules has actually been transitioning since she was 13-years-old, four years before the show starts.
The character of Jules actually matches the actress who plays her, Hunter Schafer, who also transitioned into a transgender woman.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Schafer explained that her character's young transgender origins at just 13-years-old "is pretty young in the scheme of trans people."
In the series, we see that her relationship is much closer with her father than it ever was with her mother. As a result, when Jules's true self bubbled to the surface, her dad did all he could to encourage her.
In the meantime, Euphoria is set to continue on HBO on Sunday, July 14th at 10pm ET. For viewers in the UK, we understand that Euphoria is set to make its way over onto Sky Atlantic in the coming months but no air date has been revealed just yet.
