The Toffees ace idolised Goodison Park hero Mikel Arteta and sought to model his game on the Spaniard – he joins Pride Park for the season.
A number of Derby County fans have taken to Twitter to give their thoughts on the news that Everton midfielder Kieran Dowell has joined the Championship outfit on loan for the season (official Derby website).
The Rams confirmed the deal on Thursday night, the Toffees academy graduate linking up with the Pride Park side for a third stint in the second tier following successful spells at rivals Nottingham Forest as well as last season’s second-placed side Sheffield United.
Dowell made 16 appearances for the Blades last season, helping the club win promotion to the Premier League, while the season before, he played 43 games for the City Ground side, scoring 10 goals and registering five assists (Transfermarkt).
As reported by the official Rams website, the 21-year-old idolised Spanish midfielder Mikel Arteta, a cult hero at Goodison Park thanks to his impressive stint there between 2005 and 2011, and who also enjoyed bright spells at Rangers and Arsenal.
The Derby site quotes him as saying: “He was so graceful on the ball and he made everything look easy. He was great to watch and he is someone who I looked at and tried to implement areas of his game into my own.”
Here is some of the fan reaction on Twitter to the signing of Dowell:

Now bring tomori back too
Number 10 technically better than Lawrence but wouldn’t say his defensive game is better , wouldn’t want him in a 433 but we need recruits— michael (@mlbchubbs) 11 July 2019
Maybe the Mount type 8/10 but I’d be scared to compare another player to Mount— Jack Brown (@jackbrownie) 11 July 2019
Dowell is also a world champion at youth level for England, having been a key member of the Young Lions side that won the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2017, working under former Derby winger Paul Simpson and alongside last season’s Player of the Year Fikayo Tomori.
