With Maxi Gomez looking increasingly unlikely to solve West Ham United’s striker problem, the London giants now appear to have turned their attentions to a striker completely at the other end of of his career and almost a decade older.
One of the most bizarre transfer rumours of the summer is doing the rounds on Thursday morning with Gianluca Di Marzio claiming that West Ham have made a bid to sign Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain on loan with an option for a potential £36 million permanent move.
Maybe they’ve forgotten about his rather underwhelming spell a few miles down the road at Stamford Bridge.
Just three years after scoring 36 times in 35 Serie A games for Napoli, breaking an all-time league record in the process, Higuain now looks like a sad, forlorn shadow of that irrepressible goal-machine.
He’s fallen well down the pecking order at Juventus, failed spectacularly on loan at AC Milan and, during a forgettable spell at Chelsea, found the net just five times in 18 games.
Higuain looked sluggish and rather uninspired during his five-month spell in West London and Chelsea fans seem completely nonplussed about West Ham’s apparent interest.

I hope Higuain consumes as many beers and Snickers bars as his heart desires. https://t.co/DG8k84b2BB— ROH Magelang, PhD (@PPSMChelsea) July 10, 2019
