Aston Villa are reportedly looking at alternatives to Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips.

According to The Mirror, Aston Villa will move for Stoke City ace Ryan Woods is they can’t get Leeds United ace Kalvin Phillips in a bizarre twist to the tale.

Villa have been chasing the signing of Leeds star Phillips for weeks now, but have so far found that Leeds are standing firm on their homegrown midfielder.

Leeds want £30million, with Villa’s last offer some way short of that, and whilst they’re willing to offer him a huge pay rise to £60,000-a-week, Bournemouth and Wolves are now in the mix too.

There’s a real chance Villa won’t be able to land Phillips, and Dean Smith appears to be turning his attention to alternative targets, with Stoke misfit Woods allegedly wanted.

Smith coached Woods at Brentford before he left for Stoke last summer, and his superb performances for the Bees will have lived long in the memory of the Villa boss.

At Stoke, the 25-year-old is out of favour under Nathan Jones, meaning Villa may not find it too difficult to strike a deal to reunite Woods with Smith.

This is a bizarre twist though, as The Sun on Sunday (7/7; page 61) claimed that Leeds actually wanted Woods if Phillips signed for Villa, identifying him as their preferred signing.

Woods finds himself in demand, but with Phillips wanted by two more clubs and Woods wanted by Villa, Leeds may run the risk of having neither player in Marcelo Bielsa’s side this coming season.
