Rangers have been busy bolstering Steven Gerrard's squad this summer, and signing number eight appears to be on the horizon.
The Gers have added George Edmundson, Jordan Jones, Joe Aribo, Jake Hastie, Greg Stewart and Sheyi Ojo this summer, as well as securing Steven Davis on a permanent basis.
However, Gerrard has been keen to add one more centre back. Edmundson has been the replacement for loanee Joe Worrall, but a more experienced option was wanted to replace Gareth McAuley.
On Wednesday, reports broke in Sweden that Rangers were closing in on Bologna defender Filip Helander, with Aftonbladet reporting that a deal worth SEK 50 million (£4.2million) was near to being done.
The link certainly came from nowhere, but the deal is now on the verge of completion, marking Gerrard's biggest outlay on one player since taking the job last summer.
Helander, 26, has experience with Malmo, Hellas Verona and Bologna, as well as with the Swedish national team, and should be a dominant force in the Rangers back line at 6ft 4in tall.
Rangers fans have been taking to Twitter to share their thoughts on the move, believing that he ticks the boxes for Gerrard, but some believe that the money involved is 'a lot' for Rangers, with some believing that he must quickly show that he's worth such a huge outlay.
Others are worried about Nikola Katic's future as a result of this move, even feeling that star striker Alfredo Morelos may have to be sold to make such a deal financially viable.
How this was kept under wraps until a deal was agreed is tremendous. Ticks all the boxes for what we need as well.— Grant Reid (@grantreid1) July 10, 2019
Helander signing is fine, but that is a lot of money for us.— John (@JG93_) July 10, 2019
€5 million big ones for Filip Helander. Plays in Serie A and is a Swedish International. I think we have a great player on our hands.— Curtis (@1872Curtis) July 10, 2019
Filip Helander must be one hell of a player if we’re paying £5m for him— Kevin Wakeham (@KWRFC1995) July 10, 2019
I genuinely don't think spending £4.5 million on a CB in Filip Helander should be a priority for us. Goldson, Katic and Edmunsson should surely be sufficient for us, with Mayo / Finlayson if we need a 4th to step in? Unless Katic or Goldson are on the move?— David Hamill (@DiscoDaveHamill) July 10, 2019
£5m for Filip Helander is steep but his contract expires in 2022, can see him and Katic being rotated if we get him— Connor Saunderson (@Casboy06) July 10, 2019
Hope signing the guy helander doesn't mean katic will be be back on the bench, cos this guy won't be sitting on the bench if he's been signed at that price.would have katic before goldson.— Gary Caw (@garycawnew) July 10, 2019
Helander in. That's Morelos away.— KnightswoodBear (@KnightswoodBear) July 10, 2019
£4mil outlay on a single player? If this is completed, it will be significant and Helander will have to deliver.— Graeme.Hanna (@graeme818) July 10, 2019
Biggest spend since Jelavic?
If we are paying 4m for Helander then he better be worth every single penny I’m not trying to put any unnecessary pressure on the guy but it’s been a long time since we’ve spent that much on a player— JW_72 (@WATPForever) July 10, 2019
If the boy Helander signs a genuinely think we're looking at 3 at the back, Tav and Barisic wing backs— Stuart Watson (@swwatson6) July 10, 2019
Looked at clips of Helander looks like Jordan Jones could be his perfect team mate. He seems to live a clever dink over the top to a running left winger— Craig Smith (@csljm84) July 10, 2019
