Rangers have been busy bolstering Steven Gerrard's squad this summer, and signing number eight appears to be on the horizon.

The Gers have added George Edmundson, Jordan Jones, Joe Aribo, Jake Hastie, Greg Stewart and Sheyi Ojo this summer, as well as securing Steven Davis on a permanent basis.

However, Gerrard has been keen to add one more centre back. Edmundson has been the replacement for loanee Joe Worrall, but a more experienced option was wanted to replace Gareth McAuley.

On Wednesday, reports broke in Sweden that Rangers were closing in on Bologna defender Filip Helander, with Aftonbladet reporting that a deal worth SEK 50 million (£4.2million) was near to being done.

The link certainly came from nowhere, but the deal is now on the verge of completion, marking Gerrard's biggest outlay on one player since taking the job last summer.

Helander, 26, has experience with Malmo, Hellas Verona and Bologna, as well as with the Swedish national team, and should be a dominant force in the Rangers back line at 6ft 4in tall.

Rangers fans have been taking to Twitter to share their thoughts on the move, believing that he ticks the boxes for Gerrard, but some believe that the money involved is 'a lot' for Rangers, with some believing that he must quickly show that he's worth such a huge outlay.

Others are worried about Nikola Katic's future as a result of this move, even feeling that star striker Alfredo Morelos may have to be sold to make such a deal financially viable.
