ESPN reported that Aston Villa were among the clubs who made an approach for Alberto Moreno.

The Spanish left-back is set to join Villarreal after being released by Liverpool.

And according to ESPN, Aston Villa boss Dean Smith may have been keen on taking him to the West Midlands.

But it's a blessing in disguise that it failed because, well, Moreno isn't all that great.

Going forward, the jet-heeled Moreno is one hell of an asset, but defensively he was a bit of a nightmare in the Premier League and the Villans might've dodged a bit of a bullet here.

There would've been minimal risk, by virtue of the fact that he was available for free, but Smith made the right decision in going for Matt Targett instead.

The former Southampton left-back joined Villa in an £11 million deal earlier this month [Reuters] and he's a much more balanced defender than Moreno.

He is a good defender and he contributes a lot in an attacking sense. Moreno is a bigger name, but Targett is the bigger player.

It's been a wonderful transfer window for the newly-promoted club so far, with six quality signings under their belt, and bringing in the former Liverpool man might've dampened enthusiasm a little.
