A simple guide for how to unlock all the Dr Mario World characters in Nintendo’s mobile experience without using microtransactions.

Having come to our aid a day early, Nintendo’s newest mobile adventure, Dr. Mario World, is now available to play. But, much like every other mobile experience, its intent isn’t solely to provide people with a hospital soap more melodramatic than Joey’s parody in Friends. Instead, Nintendo’s lofty goal is to batter you into submission so you eventually end up using the game’s microtransactions to unlock new characters.

Fortunately, despite being a task more gruelling and time consuming than climbing Mount Everest without any legs, there is a way to unlock all Dr. Mario World characters without resorting to microtransactions.

You won’t like the answer and you probably won’t abide by it, but it’s the simple solution to not spending microtransactions – i.e. don’t.

How to unlock all Dr. Mario World characters without microtransactions

Unlike other modern AAA video games that take your money and then continue to beat you like a pinata for more, there isn’t too much of an issue with mobile games such as Dr. Mario World using microtransactions as that’s how these games make a profit.

Granted, the microtransactions model of mobile games has royally messed up the AAA games industry, but that doesn’t mean titles such as Dr. Mario World should be avoided at all costs.

Instead, if you want to use microtransactions in Dr. Mario World, then proceed ahead. I certainly won’t judge you the same way I scowl at those who complain about microtransactions in AAA games being evil but then feed the devil by buying pointless cosmetics.

Similar to other mobile titles, the microtransactions in Dr. Mario World are a way for players to spend real-life money on bundles of Diamonds.

Below you’ll find the rate of currency:

  • 20 Diamonds: $1.99
  • 53 Diamonds: $4.99
  • 110 Diamonds: $19.99
  • 550 Diamonds: $39.99
  • 1,050 Diamonds: $69.99

Diamonds can be used to unlock characters.

The titular game starts off with either the world’s plumpiest doctor, Mario, the world’s biggest damsel in distress, Princess Peach, or the world’s most recognisable hybrid of turtles and dragons, Bowser.

Once you clear the first area and reach stage 20, players can then unlock Dr. Mario World‘s plethora of characters.

There are currently only 10 different characters to play as in Dr. Mario World, and you can find a list of them below.

  • Dr. Mario
  • Dr. Peach
  • Dr. Bowser
  • Dr. Luigi
  • Dr. Toad
  • Dr. Yoshi
  • Dr. Toadette
  • Dr. Wendy
  • Dr. Ludwig
  • Dr. Bowser Jr

Again, these characters (bar the first three) can be unlocked once you have reached stage 20. To unlock them, you either need to use 4,000 coins or spend 40 diamonds.

While this doesn’t sound too bad, the catch is that you unlock characters at random. This means that you can’t just visit the store and pick Bowser Jr. off the shelf.

In addition, character pulls can be repeated, and this results in said character’s skill level being raised until it reaches its maximum potential.

So, to unlock characters in Dr. Mario World, you need to visit the Characters Menu, select Staffing, and then pray to the big guy upstairs for you to unlock your favourite doctor.

As for not using microtransactions, you will simply have to grind through the experience to keep attaining coins.

This is as much a hassle as you’d expect from a mobile game, but at least the gameplay, visuals, and music are all top-notch.
