Everton are reportedly moving for Roma’s Steven N’Zonzi.

Steven Nzonzi of AS Roma reacts during the Serie A match between AS Roma and SSC Napoli at Stadio Olimpico on March 31, 2019 in Rome, Italy.

According to Italian newspaper Leggo, Everton have registered their interest in signing Roma midfielder Steven N’Zonzi, but would face competition from Marseille.

N’Zonzi left the Premier League for Sevilla in 2015, leaving Stoke City to go and win a Europa League trophy, before heading on to Roma last summer.

The 6ft 5in midfielder was a regular as he followed Monchi to Rome, racking up 39 appearances in all competitions, scoring just one goal as he has adapted his game to being a true anchor man rather than the all-action player he was at Stoke.

Now though, with Roma having a full-scale overhaul this summer, N’Zonzi could go, with Everton and Marseille believed to have registered an interest without making a concrete move.

It’s hard to see Marcel Brands pushing for this one. The Dutchman tends to favour younger players with resale value, and N’Zonzi – who turns 31 in December – is the complete opposite of that.

Sinking money into a player of that age may not be the smartest of ideas, and we’re suggesting this one is hard to believe, given Brands’ approach to transfers.

Steven Nzonzi of AS Roma looks on during the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 Second Leg match between FC Porto and AS Roma at Estadio do Dragao on March 06, 2019 in Porto, Portugal.

The only way this makes sense is if Everton are selling Idrissa Gueye, and they want a replacemet with Premier League experience to come in and take his role as a hard-working, defensive-minded midfielder.

There aren’t even any rumours about Gueye leaving right now though, so don’t expect to see the French powerhouse arriving at Goodison Park unless there’s a major change of Everton’s situation in the coming weeks.
