Phillip Cocu might have only been the Derby County manager for a matter of days but it should already be apparent to the experienced Dutchman that replacing Harry Wilson is a matter of priority.
The reigning EFL Young Player of the Year, Wilson was a revelation during his loan spell at Pride Park from Liverpool, comfortably finishing as the club’s top scorer in the Championship with 16 goals, not to mention a further four assists.
But with the Welsh wing wizard returning to Anfield, there is a gaping void on the right hand side of Derby’s attack. Yet they might have just identified the perfect replacement in Ivan Cavaleiro.
Unlike Wilson, a subtle and skilful player, Cavaleiro is a brutish bulldog of a forward. He loves nothing more than to drive at goal at full pelt, shrugging full-backs off along the way.
Nine goals and 12 assists as Wolves won the Championship title in 2018, Wolves' one-time £7 million record signing would be a perfect addition for a manager like Cocu, whose counter-attacking approach inspired PSV to three Eredivisie titles in four years.
Wolvesbite say that a deal is on the cards – and Derby fans could not be happier.
IVAN CAVALEIRO OH EI OH HE DANCES PAST DEFENDERS OH EI OH HE NEVER GIVES THE BALL AWAYYYYYY #dcfc— mb11 (@NotoriousMB11) July 9, 2019
I would love to see this player at Derby, great attacking player, strong , fast gets goals, be a great addition— Lisa Van Howard (@broad8133) July 9, 2019
12 assists is the most eye-catching, 9 goals is on the borderline in the EFL during Wolves winning campaign after playing 42 matches and he scored 3 goals in the PL, last season and made 1 assist during 23 matches. Can he replicate that form from two seasons ago remains the key.— mightymadram (@mightymadram) July 9, 2019
I’d take him here if the deal was right. At a good age at 25 with room for improvement. Would imagine he’d be Wilson’s replacement. Not as profilic as Harry in front of goal, but may add more as an all round player. Fulham & Huddersfield most likely favourites as they could buy.— Derby County Talk (@derbycountytalk) July 9, 2019
If there is any truth in the rumours regarding us showing an interest in Wolves forward Ivan Cavaleiro, then it's time to start getting excited (if you weren't already). As someone who is due to marry into a family of Wolves fans, they rate him very highly. #DCFC #DCFCFans pic.twitter.com/WunvgXKuc7— Joe Pendlebury (@itsjoep) July 9, 2019
If Cocu's first signing for Derby is Martin Skrtel I will not be happy, he is way past it now. On the other hand if his first signing is Ivan Cavaleiro then I won't mind so much. #dcfc #dcfcfans we need young talent or we won't make the top 6!!— Scott Knight (@ScottAKnight) July 9, 2019
