Leeds United won’t be signing midfielder Ander Iturraspe this summer.
Leeds United enjoyed a quite remarkable transfer flurry last week, but Spanish midfielder Ander Iturraspe won’t be joining the Elland Road ranks.
Jack Harrison, Ben White, Liam McCarron, Helder Costa, Rafa Mujica and Guille Amor all joined Leeds last week, bolstering Marcelo Bielsa’s squad ahead of the new season.
There are mounting concerns that Kalvin Phillips and Kemar Roofe may move on though, and Leeds may be eyeing up potential replacements just in case they move on.
One player touted to arrive as an option in Phillips’ holding midfield role was Iturraspe, who was a favourite of boss Bielsa during their time together at Athletic Bilbao.
Last month, El Desmarque reported that Leeds were keen to sign Iturraspe on a free transfer, and he wasn’t averse to a move to reunite with Bielsa either.
On a free transfer, the 30-year-old anchor man would have been a fine signing for Leeds, bringing vast experience, an understanding of Bielsa’s approach, and ability both on and off the ball.
With Phillips still at Elland Road, Leeds haven’t gone chasing a new midfielder yet, and their hopes of signing Iturraspe are now over, after his move to Espanyol was confirmed earlier today.
Espanyol have signed the veteran on a one-year deal with the option of a second year as he chose to stay in La Liga, and a reunion with Bielsa is not only impossible now, but looks unlikely in the future too.
