West Ham United are still in the race for Maxi Gomez – but is the Celta Vigo striker heading to the Premier League after all from La Liga?

West Ham United are not giving up yet in pursuit of Maxi Gomez.

According to Faro de Vigo, Valencia had agreed to pay a substantial sum for the Uruguayan goal machine from Celta Vigo with Santi Mina going in the other direction.

But West Ham have made an eleventh hour bid to ‘torpedo’ the deal. It is claimed that the Premier League outfit have sent their representatives to Spain, in a private jet no less, in a last-gasp attempt to snatch Gomez from under Valencia’s nose.

This long-running will-he-won’t-he saga might just have a dramatic ending after all.

The report adds that West Ham will have to trigger Gomez’s £43 million release clause though, if they do, it seems very unlikely that Valencia could respond. The Copa del Rey champions might soon be blown out of the water.

It seemed that West Ham had given up hope of signing this old-school, bull of a number nine but it is perhaps no coincidence that this late twist comes just a few hours after The Guardian claimed that they had agreed to let Marko Arnautovic get his money-spinning move to China after all.

Andy Carroll and Lucas Perez have gone already and with Arnautovic and Javier Hernandez heading out of the door, West Ham can’t really afford to let Gomez slip through their fingers.
