According to a report in the Birmingham Mail, Wigan Athletic have joined Blackburn Rovers in the race to sign Southampton’s Sam Gallagher although they face a fight in fending off Lancashire rivals.
Gallagher has been tipped to leave St Mary’s Stadium this summer. The Premier League club has already added Che Adams to their list of strikers including Charlie Austin, Shane Long and Danny Ings.
Wigan struggled on their return to the Championship last season and their lack of goals (51 in 46 games) was an area for concern.
Manager Paul Cook is seemingly trying to rectify that this summer, and Gallagher would be a sound option.
The 23-year-old has plenty of Championship experience, enjoying loan spells at both Blackburn and Birmingham City where he netted a combined 17 league goals over two seasons.
A recent report in the Sun on Sunday (June 23; Page 60) claim both Brentford and Blackburn also want to sign him, but he has a preference to move to Ewood Park having enjoyed his loan spell at Rovers.
Wigan could guarantee him first-team football at the DW Stadium, but Blackburn arguably have more financial mettle and Tony Mowbray’s men look the more likely to spring a potential playoff challenge this coming season.
