Newcastle United have made Roberto Martinez one of their top choices to replace Rafael Benitez, according to reports.

It's fair to say that Mike Ashley isn’t exactly flavour of the month at Newcastle United right now.

Protests against his regime have intensified following the departure of Rafael Benitez and Newcastle fans have a right to be up in arms.

Ashley does not appear to be the right man to take Newcastle forward over the long-term, but he has, at least, made the correct call as the Magpies search for Benitez’s replacement.

 

The Northern Echo claim that Newcastle want Roberto Martinez to take charge at St. James’ Park, but they will not allow him to keep his current job with Belgium.

There had been suggestions that Martinez could land the job at Newcastle while juggling his current international commitments.

However, Ashley is said to have no interest in appointing a manager who has split loyalties.

It is faint praise to suggest that Ashley has made the right call now, as the damage has already been done with Benitez’s departure.

However, Newcastle do need to ensure that their next manager is solely committed to them and it does appear that the controversial owner has made a good decision here, at the very least.
