Newcastle United are said to have made Roberto Martinez their number one choice to take over from Rafael Benitez.

Newcastle United fans have not greeted the news that Roberto Martinez is their top choice to takeover from Rafael Benitez with widespread approval.

The Sun claim that Newcastle have made Martinez their number one target, as they seek a replacement for Benitez.

Martinez is currently in charge at Belgium, but Newcastle are reportedly prepared to offer him a massive pay rise to come to St. James’ Park.

Some Newcastle fans still don’t believe that an offer of a salary increase would be enough to convince Martinez to come and others think he isn’t a good fit.

Martinez is well known in England having had previous spells with Wigan Athletic and Everton.

The Spaniard has paid some stylish football and he is arguably a more exciting appointment than some of the names linked with the Newcastle job.

Whoever does take over at St. James’ Park faces a very tough task, as there is a real feeling of discontent around the club following Benitez’s departure.
