Newcastle United fans have not greeted the news that Roberto Martinez is their top choice to takeover from Rafael Benitez with widespread approval.
Martinez is currently in charge at Belgium, but Newcastle are reportedly prepared to offer him a massive pay rise to come to St. James’ Park.
Some Newcastle fans still don’t believe that an offer of a salary increase would be enough to convince Martinez to come and others think he isn’t a good fit.
Not sure what’s worse, the fact we’re going for him, or the fact we won’t get him… can see this being a dragged out scenario all summer, like one long transfer deadline day, which finishes with a “we tried to get him over the line but just couldn’t manage it”— Paul Marshall (@PaulMarshall1) July 2, 2019
Jesus wept, I didn’t think today could get worse. Can the PL please just relegate us now and not waste everyone’s time— Matthew (@JB4t00n) July 2, 2019
Why would he come here— The Half Geordie (@TheHalfGeordie) July 2, 2019
Martinez gets to work with the likes of Hazard and DeBruyne every few months with Belgium. Why would he swap that to work for Ashley?— Graeme Cross (@GraemeCross1) July 3, 2019
Martinez!WTF that’s me finished I can’t stand him— Robert Atkinson (@bob352) July 3, 2019
Martinez is well known in England having had previous spells with Wigan Athletic and Everton.
The Spaniard has paid some stylish football and he is arguably a more exciting appointment than some of the names linked with the Newcastle job.
Whoever does take over at St. James’ Park faces a very tough task, as there is a real feeling of discontent around the club following Benitez’s departure.
