New Aston Villa star has joined from Southampton.

New Aston Villa signing Matt Targett has told the club's official website that now ex-Southampton teammate Ryan Bertrand gave him good advice ahead of his move.

Targett was second choice at Southampton behind Bertrand and has moved to newly promoted Villa for a better chance of playing regular football.

Bertrand had a spell at Aston Villa on loan in 2013/14 and only had positive comments for Targett.

Targett said Bertrand encouraged him to make the move.

He told Villa's club website: "He was massively positive about Aston Villa.

"He said it was a massive football club, with a great stadium, great facilities and great fans.

"I know he wasn’t here that long but he made a point of telling me how much he enjoyed playing here. He couldn’t have spoken anymore highly of this place when he chatted to me."

Bertrand's comments should have been an eye opener for Targett and it says a lot about the club that they made such a big impression on him in a brief time.

This is a big chance for Targett to establish himself as a first choice, when it did not look viable at Southampton.

Villa getting a deal done early this summer gives him time to get bedded in during pre-season and try and win over his new fans early on.
