Spurs tied up two new signings today, landing winger Jack Clarke before loaning him back to Leeds United, and then completing a club-record deal for Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele.
Mauricio Pochettino will have his eye on more additions after breaking the run of more than 500 days without a new signing, and Zaniolo has been a top target.
It's now believed that Tottenham have spoken about a deal which would see defender Alderweireld head to the Italian capital in a part-exchange move.
Roma would happily take Alderweireld having just let Kostas Manolas join Napoli, but the move will be hugely divisive on the Tottenham side of things.
Alderweireld is a hugely popular player at Tottenham, and fans would much rather see him sign a new contract than move on this summer, as he'll be difficult to replace.
Yet the flip side is that Alderweireld can be signed for a £25million release clause this month, and it may be better to use him to reduce the asking price of a talented teenage playmaker like Zaniolo, who hit six goals and two assists in all competitions.
The Italian would be a major talent for the future, but giving up Alderweireld won't go down with some – certainly less popular than letting Rose or Trippier go.
